$772 Million Set Aside to Settle Prempro Lawsuits

Pfizer Corporation has announced that it has set aside a large pool of money to settle lawsuits over the use of the controversial prescription medication Prempro. The drug, used to treat menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis in women, has been the focus of a tremendous amount of litigation in the past decade. Verdicts have been handed down favoring both sides. A cancer expert witness often can help explain the scientific basis of either position.

A Once-Promising Medication Turned into a Nightmare

Prior to 2002, over 6 million women took the prescription hormone therapy drug Prempro. At first, the drug was welcomed as a major milestone in helping women cope with symptoms related to menopause. This changed when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) abandoned a research study into the drug’s efficacy after it was discovered that a disproportionate number of its research participants developed ovarian and other forms of cancer and other maladies.

Large class-action and individual lawsuits became the order of the day for Wyeth, the manufacturer of Prempro, which had depended on Prempro sales for a significant portion of its profit. (Pfizer acquired Wyeth in 2009). What was once an innovative treatment became a litigious nightmare.

Health Problems Tied to Prempro

Numerous serious diseases and side effects have been associated with the use of Prempro. Among the problems tied to Prempro are:

• Breast, uterine, endometrial and ovarian cancers
• Heart disease
• Gallbladder disease
• Blood clots
• Lupus
• Asthma

The result of all this is that Wyeth, and now Pfizer, has had thousands of lawsuits to contend with, and many patients who used the medication have suffered serious illness.
